The students from Paññāsāstra International School (PSIS) held a Science Fair on June 25, 2016 on the ground floor of the academic building. The purpose of the project was to provide an opportunity for students to create new ideas about renewable power. Paññāsāstra International School (PSIS) is an elite international high school in the capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. At PSIS, English plays a central role within the natural science subjects. From its beginnings, PSIS has established projects, such as Water Rocket, Spelling bee, and the Science Fair, to provide practical ways for students to get ‘hands-on’ experience in various fields of endeavor. Science Fair competition provides the junior and senior high school students the opportunity to take part in the competition with an emphasis on creating new ideas for viable methods for creating renewable power. At PSIS, we encourage students to investigate environmentally friendly ways to help resolve the many environmental issues which plague our planet. The 2016 Science Fair Event aimed to promote and provide opportunities to apply theories studied in the natural science classrooms for all grades; and to implement this information through a fun and challenging student centered competition.
In this competition the students had to present their findings without assistance of their teacher. One interesting fact of note was the shear number of students who chose to participate in the event. In total, there were 567 participants involved in 21 projects. The students created posters in English language, which explained the details about each of their individual projects. The main purpose of the event was to integrate the natural science subjects within a team-work structure and to encourage leadership skills. Further information: * Students needed to observe, classify, measure, predict, and collect data for their analysis * The exhibitors were required to explain the processes involved in their projects with responsibility and clear conclusions * They used local materials and new creative ideas to make suggestions of ways to resolve some of the environmental problems we face in terms of energy consumption in the 21st century. * Cooperation between guardian/parents, teachers and students was encouraged, in order to build confidence for the students in both public speaking and the practical use of the English language. * Finally, the three winning projects as selected by the judges and PSIS Science Committee were: 1. First Place: Soap Production from grade 12E 2. Second Place: Laser Security from grade 12D 3. Third Place: A Turbine Wind Experiment from 12F
